Unicomics + Comicbox

last week was really busy as i was involved in the University of Hertfordshire’s comic events programme.
Unicon was a first time entry in ever expanding calendar of comics events.
On Thursday i took part in Comicbox, an evening of presentation around the subject of autobiography. Organised by Laydeez do comics ( Thank you Nicola and Sarah ).
The idea was to give each creator ten minutes to talk about there work. My approach was to show a few images, stare at the ground and improvise what effectively was a comedy routine, with a reading of one of my pages. I have no idea if it made sense, got some applause and felt acutely embarrassed. Also, really enjoyed the event.
Feeling embarrassed seems to be a sensation that has grown not diminished as i try and move forward with my comics.
Escaping the horror of public speaking, no way! Saturday saw me chairing a discussion between myself, kieron Gillen and Matt Sheret on the subject of music and comics. Thankfully both gentleman have plenty of words, so the panel did run smoothly. By the end, my head was on fire with lots of new ideas.
The day was a success, the convention part itself need more punters, but that is only natural for a first time event.
There was a steady flow of people for all the other events, so that was good for the organisers who did a fantastic job.
What was really impressive was the comic exhibitors. They were friendly approachable and made a great effort to educate the public that were curious as to what it was all about.This part of comic gigs is so important to growth, the constant spreading the word, and on this day it was in very good hands.
Finally, thanks to Daniel for getting me involved, and Douglas for being great company on the day.
But, the real thanks have to go to Natalie, Danny and Katie, Emma, and all the staff and Volunteers at the university. You people ROCK!
